Please note that for all categories, judges will look for evidence of commercial success in the market and sustainable business models. The exception is for the following categories:

For these categories,  judges will be focusing more on the innovation element, as well achievement of the stated objective and addressing of a particular market need.

Joint entries are encouraged for companies who have worked together to produce a particular project, product, service or application.

Games

With the proliferation of next generation handsets, new business models and investment in applications, it is clear that the quality, accessibility and popularity of games has increased in the past year. This award will showcase the very latest developments in mobile games, which remains one of the biggest sectors of the content market. Judges will be looking for entries that demonstrate use of new and existing technologies and commercial approaches that help to drive the growth of the mobile games with particular focus upon:

  • Innovation - technical, creative or commercial
  • Great controls and gameplay

  • Suitability to the medium

Music Service

Mobile music services have come a long way in the past year. This award profiles the latest innovative music services that exploit the mobile platform’s unique attributes and provide an affordable and enjoyable consumer experience. Judges will be looking for services that meet the consumers’ insatiable demand for music discovery, sharing and access whilst demonstrating a clear and sustainable business model. They will give particular focus to:

TV & Video Service

With the increase of 3G handsets with 80%-90% HSPA coverage and more appealing consumer services, MEF has predicted that 2009 will be the year that mobile video really takes off. This award profiles the latest developments in Mobile TV & video services which have expanded take-up and created new market opportunities. Entries can be services, platforms or enabling technologies. Judges will be looking for tv and video services whether white-label or consumer-facing and will give particular focus to:

  • Innovation - technical, creative or commercial
  • Best use of Mobility
  • Quality of experience
  • Quantifiable business benefits
  • Proven success in the market

Who should enter: service providers, network operators, broadcasters, handset manufacturers, content aggregators and technology developers

Content

This award celebrates the most creative and exciting content for the mobile medium. The category highlights the latest in mobile content including live action video, animation (one-offs or series) and other forms of original content which is either bespoke for mobile or effectively repurposed for the mobile platform. Judges will be looking for entries that are helping to establish mobile as a key device for accessing content, and will give particular focus to:

  • Compelling & entertaining content for the mobile medium
  • Viralness
  • Innovation - creative or commercial
  • Optimisation for mobile
  • High quality production values
  • Proven consumer adoption and success in the market
  • Quantifiable business benefits

Technology Innovation

This award recognizes innovation which either helps to overcome existing technological barriers and/or uses technology to drive the take-up of mobile entertainment. Applicants will need to demonstrate how their entry has achieved their stated objective, with particular focus on:

  • How the outstanding project has facilitated the take-up of mobile entertainment or resolved an existing technological barier
  • Contribution to building a quality user experience and/or sustainable business model

Social Networking

Over the past year, mobile social networking has continued to grow rapidly and become an increasingly important driver of mobile entertainment consumption. This award highlights the best in mobile social networking services, whether they are bespoke, white label or consumer-facing brands. Judges will be looking for entries which have gained success using innovative revenue models and relevant technologies to create a genuinely immersive experience on the mobile for the user. They will also look for evidence of leveraging the social networking capability of the service to create new revenue streams and/or drive content consumption, with particular focus on:

Search & Discovery

This award highlights the latest mobile search and discovery services that are helping drive mobile content discovery and usage. Judges will be looking for entries which make it easy to find, purchase and popularize mobile content, with particular focus on:

  • Usability & interactivity

Ad Campaign

This award recognizes the importance of the mobile platform in driving mobile media. It looks at how this entertainment-rich medium is being used effectively to create successful mobile entertainment campaigns and produce branded content in its own right. Judges will look for creativity of approach and use of mobile-specific capabilities in campaigns that are either stand-alone for the mobile medium, or part of a larger multi-platform campaign. including:

  • Creativity and best use of the mobile platform

Operating in an increasingly competitive landscape, today’s successful D2C players must continue to innovate and create compelling mobile content experience to attract and retain consumers. This award recognizes the most effective direct to consumer services in the last 12 months. Judges will be looking for services that have added value & choice for consumers. Criteria include:

  • Innovation - technical, creative or commercial
  • Extending choice for mobile consumers
  • Proven high consumer awareness and adoption
  • Evidence of increasing the success of the mobile entertainment industry
  • Evidence of repeat usage
  • Clarity of consumer-facing information
  • Quantifiable business benefits

Who should enter: any company involved in the development, production and/or distribution of D2C services or applications (Note: network operators are not permitted to enter this category)

Application

Over the past year, we have seen an abundance of innovative mobile widgets and applications come to market. Whether they are embedded on handsets or downloadable by consumers from app stores, single-purpose or more comprehensive, this category celebrates the best of all forms of mobile applications. Judges will be focusing on entries that are innovative, add value and relevancy for the user and a clear revenue stream for the applicant. Criteria include:

  • Innovation – technical and creative
  • UI design & quality of experience
  • Usability and interaction
  • Best use of mobility
  • Quantifiable business benefits

Who should enter:  any company involved in the development, production and/or distribution of mobile applications or widgets. Please note: All applications that will be launched by 15 May 2009 will be accepted.

Quality of Experience

This category showcases any mobile entertainment product, service or application which reaches new heights in providing a highly user-friendly, intuitive and engaging consumer experience. Entrants in this category should provide supporting data (in the form of reviews, research, usage/conversion rates). This category will be judged by a mix of consumer and business panels who will be asked to focus on:

  • Intuitive design
  • Simplicity / ease of use
  • Straightforward and relevant UI
  • Optimisation for mobile entertainment
  • Achievement of original objective

Mobile First Innovation

This category applauds successful models for mobile entertainment services, products or applications in regions where mobile penetration is greater than PC internet usage. Judges will be looking for entries that demonstrate an innovative approach to leveraging local market conditions and/or overcoming local challenges in a given territory and will give particular focus to:

  • Innovation – creative, technical or commercial
  • Proven success in addressing local market conditions, opportunities and challenges
  • Achievement of Objective
  • Quantifiable business benefits

Who should enter: Companies who are either headquartered or provide a service or product in a 'Mobile First' market.

This category recognizes ground breaking intelligence and analytics which address the industry’s continued need for comprehensive data and definitive metrics. Judges will specifically look for projects that help the mobile media industry to better quantify and analyse audience measurement, usage tracking patterns and sales results with the intent of driving continued investment and growth. Judges will be focusing on:

  • achievement of objectives that address specific market needs and meet business requirements
  • access to aggregated data
  • proof of transparency and independent verification
  • application of methodology
  • scalability
  • robustness of data
  • quantifiable business benefits

Who should enter: Specialised companies or divisions within companies focused on metrics and analysis.

Innovative Business Model

This category recognizes the latest pioneering business models driving forward mobile entertainment consumption and revenue. Judges will be looking at newly launched commercial initiatives which offer practical solutions for overcoming existing business challenges, as well as those that facilitate mobile content consumption, ultimately driving the take-up of mobile entertainment. Judges will give particular focus to:

  • Commercial innovation
  • Commercially viable models
  • Evidence of overcoming a commercial challenge to mobile entertainment
  • Evidence of encouraging a new sustainable revenue stream
  • Quantifiable business benefits

Handset

Handsets represent the gateway to the mobile content world. Over the last year, we have seen a surge in highly advanced consumer friendly smart phones and a surge of devices with rich content, social networking capability and optimized user experience capability. This category recognizes the importance of mobile handsets in driving consumer discovery and adoption of mobile entertainment. All handsets should be wirelessly connected devices and should be the latest models Criteria include:

  • Functionality of handset (GUI, navigation, optimal screen size and quality of user experience)
  • Handset specification (memory, processing power, battery life, connectivity)
  • Ease of use features for accessing mobile entertainment
  • Value-added mobile entertainment features
  • Affordable price points
  • Relevant personalisation features

Please note:  All companies entering this category are required to send in two working handsets (with activated SIM cards) so they can be tested by the judges.

Outstanding Contribution

The Outstanding Contribution Award recognises an individual who is considered to be an industry visionary and pioneer, someone whose work has been seminal and fundamental to the growth of mobile entertainment. Nominations are welcome from the public and will be put forward to the MEF Board of Directors for their consideration.
