Supporting the growth of mobile communities
The purpose of the communities initiative is to raise the visibility of community applications within the sphere of mobile entertainment. The initiative sees communities in two broad camps: either as end-user generated such as blog or chat, or content-centric such as artist sites. While both of these types of communities have proved successful in the internet world, mobile has yet to achieve this despite the unique advantages of the mobile device ie truly personal, always with their owners. In 2006 the community initiative worked with Informa to size the market for community services and placed a value on the sizeable amounts of traffic they generate for mobile networks, hence quantifying their worth in today’s terms.
