Meffys Move to Monte Carlo

Industry’s Most Coveted Awards Relocate to Prestigious New Location

7 February 2007 - The Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF) is accepting entries for their fourth annual awards, the ‘Meffys’, from today. As the industry’s recognised benchmark for measuring success and rewarding innovation, the Meffys in association with Nokia, will once again honour the most influential players from around the world. This year’s winners will be celebrated at an exclusive gala awards ceremony and dinner at the Fairmont Hotel in Monte Carlo on 5 June, alongside MEF’s official event, Mobile Entertainment Market (MeM).

For 2007, six new award categories have been added, signalling the move towards consumer-focused services and reflecting a closer collaboration between the mobile and traditional entertainment worlds – a relationship which has helped build a mobile entertainment industry currently valued at $23.2 billion worldwide*.

With an emphasis on proven business models, the Meffys are judged by leading media and telecoms journalists and analysts and have developed a reputation as the industry’s most fiercely contested and coveted prizes. In 2006, the Meffys honoured both major corporate players and independent innovators who have shaped the industry.

The six new categories launched this year are:

  • Artist Campaign Award
  • TV & Video Service Award
  • Communities & UGC Award
  • Handset Application Award
  • Innovative Business Model Award
  • Search & Discovery Award

The existing categories are as follows:

  • Games Award
  • Music Service Award
  • Content Award
  • Technology Innovation Award
  • Operator Award
  • Handset Award
  • Marketing Campaign Award

In addition, the MEF board will once again present the Outstanding Contribution Award to a talented individual whose work has had a seminal impact on the growth of the mobile entertainment industry. Previous winners of the coveted Outstanding Contribution Award include: Vesa-Matti Paananen who won the inaugural prize in 2004 for his pioneering work commercialising the ringtone; Taneli Armanto who received the accolade in 2005 for bringing the game 'Snake' to the mobile phone; and the latest winner, Jim Brailean, was recognised in 2006 for his ground-breaking work to make mobile TV a reality.

Rimma Perelmuter, MEF Executive Director, commented, “The Meffys are a barometer for the mobile entertainment industry’s hottest trends and the new categories reflect the shift towards a consumer-centric world. The introduction of a glamorous gala dinner ceremony signals the growth in stature of these awards and provides the perfect backdrop for celebrating the industry’s best entertainment on mobile devices.”
